Protests against mass tourism in several Spanish cities
Protesters in several major Spanish cities took to the streets again on Sunday to protest against mass tourism.
“The current model of tourism growth is neither viable nor fair,”
the organizers of the San Sebastián action said in a press release, but their demands were similar to those of protesters in Barcelona, Granada and the Balearic Islands.
They all want to implement a tourism model that does not have a negative impact on the well-being of locals and cities, as mass tourism pushes locals out of certain districts, drives up housing prices, exacerbating the housing crisis and contributing to the rising cost of living.
“Tourism deprives us of our bread, our roof, our future”
– wrote the protesters in Barcelona on their banners, who marched through the city center armed with water pistols alongside the posters for about two hours before being stopped by authorities near the Sagrada Familia cathedral. They got into a conflict with the workers in front of a hostel, as the protesters repeatedly tried to block the entrance with tape, at which they also threw firecrackers and sparklers.
