More than five hundred customers were defrauded in a series of online scams
The police arrested three men who, together with their companions, harmed more than five hundred customers by advertising non-existent goods, and thus obtained more than fifty million forints, the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) announced on the police website on Friday.
The prosecution was initiated by the IV. district police station. In October 2022, the perpetrators created websites for companies with no real commercial background, and then advertised various products – computer parts, firewood, furniture, food – on the Internet. To give the impression of a realistic business, sales agents were hired, with whom they also signed an employment contract, whose task was to publish the advertisements.
The authorities became aware of the series of frauds through a report. The first victim asked the police for help on November 16, 2022, as he ordered 5 cubic meters of firewood and then paid HUF 164,000 by bank transfer. For several weeks, the fraudsters tricked him on the phone, and finally he visited the headquarters of the company registered on the Internet in Terezváros, where only one headquarters service company was operating.
