The producer price of domestic slaughter pigs decreased by more than a quarter in one year

According to preliminary data from the European Commission, the slaughterhouse entry price for pigs belonging to the “E” trade class in the EU was 1.5 euros/kilogram of cold carcass weight in January 2026, a decrease of 18.7 percent in one year. In the 6th week of 2026, the pig prices of companies and slaughterhouses that are decisive for the EU pig market were on average 17.2 percent lower than the average price of the same week of the previous year. The contract price in Germany and the purchase price of Tönnies were both EUR 1.45/kilogram split weight in the observed week. Vion 1.21, Tican and Danish Crown all bought pigs at €1.25/kg carcase weight in week 6.

According to KSH data, Hungary’s live pig export increased by 8.8 percent to 39.9 thousand tons in 2025 compared to the amount in 2024. The main partners were Romania, Moldova, Albania and Austria. The import of live pigs decreased by 23.5 percent to 46.9 thousand tons, Slovakia, Croatia and Germany being the largest suppliers. The quantity of pork sold on the international market increased by 5.7 percent (156.9 thousand tons), and its value decreased by 13.8 percent during the observed period. Most of the pork was shipped to Romania, Italy, Croatia, Slovakia and Bulgaria. The volume of pork imports decreased by 10.7 percent (127.4 thousand tons) and the value by 13.4 percent in 2025 compared to the previous year. More than two-thirds of the pork came from Germany, Spain, Poland and Austria. According to the data of AKI PÁIR, the producer price of domestically produced slaughter pigs without VAT and transport costs was 533 forints/kilogram of carcass hot weight in January 2026, a decrease of 26.7 percent compared to the average price a year earlier.
