The government views the Hungarian food industry as a strategic sector, and has therefore provided significant resources for its development over the past decade. Since 2014, more than 1,170 billion forints in support has been received by the sector through various domestic and European Union programs, stated István Nagy, Minister of Agriculture.

The minister pointed out that the development of the food industry is crucial for the future of Hungarian agriculture, the preservation of rural jobs and food security. The government therefore views the sector as a strategic sector and has launched numerous support programs to enable Hungarian businesses to operate efficiently and competitively with modern technology. The Large Enterprise Investment Support Program provided more than HUF 78 billion in support to businesses in the sector, while an additional nearly HUF 127 billion was received for food industry developments under the Investment Incentive Target Allocation.

The Minister emphasized that even in times of challenges, the sector’s stakeholders can count on the government. He recalled that more than HUF 44 billion in support was received by the sector to mitigate the economic effects of the global pandemic, while more than HUF 50 billion was available for energy efficiency developments to mitigate the consequences of the energy price explosion that occurred in 2022.

István Nagy noted that the European Union co-financed programs also played a decisive role in the development of the food industry sector. In the Economic Development and Innovation Operational Program, 1,341 support contracts were signed between 2014-2025 and nearly HUF 80 billion in payments were made. In the Rural Development Program, more than a thousand food industry and 668 wine industry investments received support, totaling more than 300 billion forints.

The Minister of Agriculture also highlighted that in the current Common Agricultural Policy Strategic Plan, nearly 500 billion forints are available until 2027 to support food and processing industry developments. The interest in the applications published so far is outstanding, and more than two thousand applications have already been received for the three calls. More than 300 food industry enterprises have already received nearly 600 million forints of funding to stimulate employment. The goal remains unchanged: to strengthen the domestic processing industry, increase the proportion of products produced from Hungarian raw materials, and ensure that the Hungarian food industry remains a stable pillar of the national economy in the future, said István Nagy.
