The chamber will take over the registration of more than 640 thousand individual entrepreneurs from 2027

Based on the decision of the Parliament on March 10, the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MKIK) will keep the register of sole proprietors from 2027 and support entrepreneurs with a one-stop administration system. The measure aims to simplify business administration and improve services. 

The decision fits into the 11-point program for business development announced by the government and the Chamber of Commerce last fall, one of the important goals of which is to reduce the administrative burden on businesses and simplify the operating environment. The process also indicates that the role and economic weight of the sole proprietorship sector has further strengthened in recent years. 

The number of sole proprietorships now exceeds that of partnerships in Hungary, which clearly shows that this flexible form of entrepreneurship accounts for an increasingly large part of the economy.  

According to OPTEN data, the task involves handling a significant administrative volume; at the end of 2025, nearly 648 thousand sole proprietors were registered in Hungary. The dynamics of the sector are also significant: in 2025, approximately 82 thousand new sole proprietorships were established, while 63 thousand ceased to exist, and nearly 90 thousand businesses suspended their activities. The number of entrepreneurs has been continuously expanding in recent years, and between 2020 and 2025, sole proprietorships The number of people increased from 557 thousand to nearly 648 thousand. The number of active sole proprietors has clearly exceeded the number of partnerships – which has been decreasing significantly since the change in the KATA regulation – since 2024, which indicates the growing importance of the sole proprietorship form in the economy. 

The takeover of the management of the registry will thus mean the administration of tens of thousands of foundings, terminations, suspensions and other status changes annually in the new system, the total number of which could reach up to 200 thousand annually. data-contrast=”auto”>. 

In terms of territorial breakdown, more than one-third of sole proprietorships operate in Budapest and Pest County. Nearly 140 thousand sole proprietorships were registered in the capital, and more than 100 thousand in Pest County at the end of 2025. The capital is expected to provide the most administrative tasks in the future, as not only is the number of businesses high, but the number of individual entrepreneurs – the combined rate of establishment and termination – is also outstanding, with turnover exceeding 25 percent, which means that a quarter of individual entrepreneurs change hands in the capital. At the sectoral level, most individual entrepreneurs operate in the service sectors. The largest areas include professional, scientific and technical activities, construction, trade, and other services.
