Nébih removes more than 55 tons of honey of unknown origin from circulation
Inspectors from the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) found hygiene and documentation deficiencies that posed a serious food safety risk in a warehouse in Budapest. As a result of the inspection, nearly 55 tons of food had to be withdrawn from circulation. The procedure and the imposition of a fine are in progress.
During the inspection of the Budapest warehouse, Nébih experts uncovered serious food chain safety deficiencies. A large number of sealed metal barrels stored on pallets were found in the warehouse: a total of 198 containers with a gross weight of 300 kilograms each. In addition to the metal barrels, other non-food products (buttons, USB hubs, light bulbs) were also stored in the warehouse. According to the entrepreneur, the containers contained honey, and when a randomly selected metal barrel was opened, a slightly crystallized substance that actually looked like honey was found inside. However, there was no manufacturer’s label on the barrels, a serial number written in felt-tip pen on the top, and a numerical code printed on the bottom and top of the sides, of which the customer could not explain the meaning of the upper number. The documents he presented did not contain any data that could be matched with the markings on the containers, so he could not prove the traceability required by law, and the entire set was considered food of unknown origin.
According to the customer, the barrels came to him in December 2024 during a bartell transaction. During the investigation, it was revealed that the entrepreneur does not operate the HACCP and self-control system required by law. He also does not have a contract for the transport of animal by-products, and rodent and insect control was not certified.
Based on the deficiencies revealed during the inspection, the authority withdrew all items, more than 55 tons of food of unknown origin, from circulation. The affected products cannot be placed on the market, cannot be used, and have been seized by the authorities.
