The sale of genetically modified ornamental fish is prohibited and can result in fines of millions
Nébih confirmed the sale of genetically modified (GMO) ornamental fish in several pet stores across the country. Proceedings have been initiated against the companies concerned, and they can expect fines in the order of millions. The authority draws the traders’ attention to the fact that the marketing of genetically modified animals is strictly prohibited in the European Union.

In recent months, Nébih inspectors have been examining compliance with animal welfare regulations in domestic pet stores. However, in some of the stores, specialists noticed unusually brightly colored fish that “glow” under UV light, “colored tetra” and “kiwi Sumatran ornamental mullet”*. A test purchase was held, and the Nébih laboratory confirmed that the fish were indeed genetically modified individuals.
This is how they found genetically modified fish
Due to the unfavorable experience, Nébih conducted a coordinated target inspection in February in the trades selling ornamental fish in the counties of Fejér and Hajdú-Bihar, as well as in the capital, according to the preliminary data collection. Genetic tests have confirmed it in every case: the fish’s extraordinary color is caused by the fact that their genetic stock also contains the genes of another organism, typically a sea jellyfish or coral. The European Union does not allow the marketing of genetically modified animals, so according to the relevant directive, the sale of the animals in question is illegal. Fines ranging from 300,000 forints to 10 million forints can be imposed on genetically modified ornamental fish
• import,
• putting it on the market,
• export from the territory of the country,
• delivery.
Nébih has initiated proceedings against the companies involved, which are expected to result in millions in fines
The authority particularly draws the attention of pet traders to the fact that the marketing of genetically modified animals is prohibited in the European Union. Illegal practices will continue to be checked by specialists in the future.
