Is Temu really engaged in phishing?
The Temu webshop is facing serious new accusations that it engages in phishing activities through its mobile application. Temu, which offers cheap but often shoddy products, came into the spotlight as a subsidiary of China’s Pinduoduo Inc. after another app from the parent company was removed from the Google Play Store due to malicious spyware.
Temu denies the accusations, claiming that they only collect user data in specific and justified cases, and that they have implemented a number of security improvements. The webshop emphasizes that although they are part of the same company group as Pinduoduo, their operation is different.
Last year, Pinduoduo Inc. faced accusations of distributing malicious spyware, which resulted in their app being removed from the Google Play Store. Although the company has denied the allegations, for Temu these news are quite worrying.
According to the managing director of AB Holding, the data represent value and can be traded well. It advises people to take care of their personal data, not store unnecessary information on their devices and check their apps regularly. Phishers can try to exploit the data in a variety of ways, including stealing bank details and initiating transactions.
