ALDI has opened a completely cashier-free store
ALDI is revolutionizing food retail with the introduction of ALDIgo in Illinois, as reported by the Food&Wine portal. The new cashierless shopping system aims to eliminate checkout lines, cashiers and scanners and allow customers to shop and pay seamlessly.
The ALDIgo technology was first implemented in a store in Aurora and developed together with a company called Grabango. The innovative system uses advanced computer vision cameras and overhead scanners to track products placed in the cart. Customers do not need to stand in line or deal with cashiers, instead they can simply pay by credit or debit card or by using the QR code of the Grabango app. The app currently supports Apple Pay, but Google Pay is expected to be available in the near future.
Will Glaser, founder and CEO of Grabango, emphasized that the introduction of ALDIgo is an important step in the food industry. According to him, this innovation should start in a business that is in everyday use, and not in a special location created for this purpose, because this is how the system’s possible errors and limitations will really be revealed.
