The next decade will be the decade of milk
From 2015, the EU’s dairy market regulation eliminates the quota system that is in force for 30 years. It is expected that the eliminating of the quota system will redraw Europe’s “dairy sector map” in the medium term and enforcing an acute market competition and an associated spatial rearrangement.
The Hungarian producers and processors are worrying from the period coming after March 2015. Hungary has more than 2 billion liters of quota, but only 1.5 billion liters could be produced. However, until now the Italians, the Germans, the Dutch marketed much more milk than the quota. They paid 20 HUF per liter penalty. After March, however, every countries will deliver as much milk as they can, after the restriction ends. It is expected that more cheap imports will flow to Hungary, thereby displacing the domestic milk. (by our colleague)
