Milk Interprofessional Organization and Product Council: Only Hungarian milk should be on the shelves as a promotional product

The Milk Interprofessional Organization and Product Council has appealed to retail players to sell exclusively Hungarian milk as a “first-price” or “promotional price” product between April 1 and June 30 in order to ensure the survival of producers, and has also called on domestic milk processors to ensure the necessary quantity of goods at the appropriate price – the organization told MTI on Monday.

They highlighted that the European milk market has collapsed in the past six months, which was also exacerbated by the unfavorable Hungarian economic environment. The problems mentioned include the epidemiological situation, market price regulation and strong competition from imported products. While producers sold raw milk for around 200 forints per liter last year, some producers currently receive only 50-100 forints for it, or no income at all, they added. They recalled that the sector has made significant efficiency gains in the past two decades, but at the same time more than ten thousand milk producers have ceased their activity. “It is incomprehensible and unacceptable that while we are selling our milk at one of the lowest prices in Europe, Hungarian consumers are being offered discount dairy products from abroad,” they wrote. Commercial and processing industry players can join the call based on their own decision, but as they wrote, they are ready to “act decisively and spectacularly” against those who do not comply with the call, seeing them as actors interested in destroying Hungarian milk producers. The intention to join can be expressed by sending a unilateral declaration to the secretariat of the Milk Product Council by March 20, 2026, the announcement says. The Milk Interprofessional Organization and Product Council represents approximately 80 percent of Hungarian milk production.
