Last year, new car sales in the European Union rose by 1.8 percent, rising to 10.822 million from 10.631 million in 2024, according to a report posted on the ACEA website on Tuesday.

Sales of electric vehicles (BEVs) rose by 29.9 percent, They rose to 1.88 million, accounting for 17.4 percent of sales, up from 13.6 percent a year earlier.

Sales of gasoline-powered cars fell by 18.7 percent to 2.88 million, and diesel cars fell by 24.2 percent to 960,000. Their combined market share fell from 45.2 percent in 2024 to 35.5 percent last year.

In Germany, Europe’s largest car market, total car sales rose by 1.4 percent to 2.858 million units last year. In France, it fell by 5 percent to 1.632 million units, in Italy it fell by 2.1 percent to 1.525 million, and in Spain it rose by 12.9 percent to 1.149 million.

In Hungary, 129,440 new cars were sold last year, 6.4 percent more than in 2024. Sales of diesel cars fell by 2 percent to 14,374, while those of gasoline cars fell by 14.8 percent to 30,920. Sales of BEVs increased by 28.5 percent to 11,002, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) cars by 25.3 percent to 7,136, and hybrid electric (HEV) cars by 16.7 percent to 65,369.

Volkswagen Group (including Skoda, Audi, Seat and Porsche, among others) sales in the EU rose by 5.5 percent to 2.989 million units, Renault Group sales rose by 5.6 percent to 1.24 million, while Stellantis sales fell by 4.7 percent to 1.66 million.

German luxury carmaker BMW Group increased its sales by 6.4 percent to 764,331, while its main competitor Mercedes-Benz’s vehicle sales rose by 1.5 percent to 568,764.

South Korea’s Hyundai Group’s car sales fell by 3.1 percent, Japan’s Toyota Group’s by 6.3 percent and America’s Ford Motor’s by 2.3 percent.

US electric carmaker Tesla’s sales in the European Union fell by 37.9 percent to 150,500 last year, while China’s BYD Co.’s sales fell by 228 percent to 128 They jumped to 800 vehicles.

According to ACEA, 13.6 million people in the European Union work in the automotive sector, which generates 414.7 billion euros in tax revenue for European governments. The automotive industry generated more than 8 percent of the EU’s GDP.
