The Ministry of Transport invites transport organizations to the negotiating table

As a result of the expressway network developments of the past 15 years, a 2×2 lane road network of more than 2,400 kilometers will have been built by the end of 2025. The aim of the developments is to increase traffic safety and ensure that freight transport causes the least possible burden for the population – the Ministry of Construction and Transport (ÉKM) wrote in the introduction to its announcement on Wednesday, in which it announced that it would initiate consultations with the transporters’ interest groups by December 22.

During the regional consultations conducted by the ÉKM over the past year, a large number of demands from the population and local governments have arisen that pointed to the local and regional harmful effects resulting from the extraordinary amount of freight traffic using the lower-level road network.

The lower-level Approximately 3 million people suffer from the adverse effects of transit freight transport on roads every day.

Based on the results of the investigation launched by the ministry, a package of measures was created, the aim of which is to divert freight traffic to the expressway network, thereby making traffic on main and secondary roads safer and reducing environmental impacts and noise pollution on settlements.

The transport professional organizations have formulated proposals for amendments in connection with the introduction of the package of measures.

The Ministry of Construction and Transport – having reviewed the proposals formulated by the transport organizations – is open to professional consultation, and in view of this, it will initiate consultation with the transport organizations by December 22, 2025.

The ministry is ready and able to engage in constructive cooperation, which serves both to increase the competitiveness of the domestic transport sector and to protect the interests of the population, along common policy goals, the ministry announced.
