Many households spend 60,000 per month on cleaning
While few people could afford it before, now it has become an increasingly common part of everyday life to call a cleaner to their home. In addition to the lack of time, busy work schedules and family responsibilities, people increasingly believe that their free time is more valuable than the hours spent cleaning. According to research by HW Solutions, nearly half of the capital’s residents use professional help at least once a year, and the proportion of those requesting regular cleaning is constantly increasing.
The accelerated lifestyle and the spread of Western trends are also shaping our relationship with household work. While hiring a cleaner has been a common practice in Western Europe for decades, in Hungary, especially in large cities, this trend has only really taken off in recent years.
Research by HW Solutions found that around 15% of Budapest residents now call a professional regularly, i.e. every month or every two weeks, to keep their home in order. The proportion of occasional, large-scale cleaning assignments is even higher: 45-50% of Budapest residents use such services at least once a year, typically during spring cleaning.
“The expansion of the market on the service provider side is also spectacular; according to our research, in May this year, there were a total of 570 registered cleaning services operating in Hungary, of which 268 were in Budapest. This number represents a 4.76% increase compared to 2023, meaning that the number of service providers is continuously expanding,”
– highlighted Tamás Medveczky, the company’s sector director, among the findings of the survey.
What do we get for our money?
Many people clearly decide based on the costs and the duration of the cleaning when choosing a professional cleaner. The rates vary, but in general, it can be said that hourly rates range from 4,000–6,000 HUF, and prices based on square meters range from 300–600 HUF. Thus, weekly cleaning of a 60–80 m² apartment costs between HUF 45,000 and HUF 60,000 per month.
A normal cleaning typically takes 2–4 hours. A thorough cleaning of a 50–60 m² apartment takes approximately 2–2.5 hours, while for a home over 100 m² it can take over 4 hours.
“The basic cleaning package typically includes vacuuming, mopping, dusting, a complete cleaning of the bathroom and toilet, and wiping down kitchen countertops and external surfaces. Unpacking the inside of cabinets, cleaning windows or more thorough descaling is usually no longer part of the basic service,”
– explains Tamás Medveczky.
