Supermint grilled cheese test: some quality and labeling errors – official measures have been initiated

The latest Supermint product test by the National Food Chain Safety Authority (Nébih) examined 33 Hungarian-made grilled cheeses, including 9 small-scale producer products for the first time. Of the 24 factory cheeses, 16 were natural and 8 were smoked, while the small-scale producers’ products included 6 natural and 3 smoked grilled cheeses.

The laboratory tests also checked microbiological safety and compliance with the requirements of the Hungarian Food Code for dairy products — such as the water content in the non-fat dry matter and the fat value projected on the dry matter.

Results: hygiene and quality problems in some products

  • In a grilled cheese the E. coli technological hygiene criteria did not meet the requirements
     → The product was excluded from the popularity test, the manufacturer must implement hygiene corrections

  • Three products had quality defects
     → fat content or stock classification deviation

  • Seven products had labeling deficiencies found
     → official proceedings were initiated due to errors in naming and nutritional labeling

For example, in the case of a grilled cheese, the “hard” label was used instead of the semi-hard category.

Small-scale producers also had labeling problems; the affected producers were ordered to correct the errors.
