New Year’s Eve: fireworks sales near record high, imports still heavily dependent on China

The German pyrotechnics market is once again ending the year with a strong year-end boom: according to industry expectations, New Year’s Eve sales could increase by 10–15% compared to 2024, when legal retail sales were 197 million euros.

Demand is also being followed by supply: between January and September 2025, German imports rose to a record level, with a total of more than 42,400 tons of pyrotechnic products arriving in the country – the vast majority of them from China, which has been the most important supplier to the German market for decades.

From a commercial perspective, New Year’s Eve remains an extreme seasonal peak: turnover is concentrated in a short time window, inventory and logistics are stretched, while in addition to regulated sales, the illegal market also remains a significant factor. German practice also shows that despite consumer sentiment (inflation fears, geopolitical uncertainty), there is a category where “small luxury” spending remains stable at the end of the year.
