Stronger food and drug safety controlls in China
China has released food and drug safety goals for the next five years, promising stronger surveillance and export controls that officials say will help improve China's international image and relations.
The initiative comes in the wake of a major North American
recall of pet foods containing tainted wheat gluten from China. In addition to
alarming pet owners, the recall has raised concerns that the same ingredient –
used to boost protein content – could also be used in foods for humans.
China's cabinet, outlined its strategy to make food safety
the "starting point and destination of all works."
