Labeling rules for energy drinks have become stricter: they can only be marketed with clear labels

According to the National Chamber of Agriculture, the new regulation applies not only to newly manufactured products, but also to stocks already in stock and imported goods. The regulation affects domestic and foreign manufacturers, as well as well-known and new brands.

An important provision is that if the Hungarian language “energy drink” designation is not displayed in the appropriate place or in the font size specified in the law, the product cannot be marketed in Hungary, even if it can be legally sold in other countries.

The change imposes significant practical tasks on manufacturers, importers and traders. To support this, the Hungarian Energy Drink Association has prepared a special guide for stores and distributors, which summarizes in a clear way:

• which products are considered energy drinks,

• how to include the mandatory label on the packaging,

• how to handle already manufactured stocks,

• what obligations do manufacturers and retailers have with the entry into force of the new regulation?

The current tightening fits into the gradual strengthening of domestic energy drink regulation. In Hungary, a provision has also been in force since June 2025, according to which the sale of energy drinks to those under 18 is prohibited.

From a commercial perspective, the new labeling obligation may mean packaging modification and inventory management tasks in the short term, but in the long term it will create a more uniform, transparent product category, which will facilitate both official inspections and consumer information.
