Rules on meat products are getting stricter – a new concept is also included in the regulation
A new regulatory amendment has been proposed in Hungary: the Ministry of Agriculture has initiated the revision of Decree 152/2009 (XI. 12.) FVM, which sets out the binding requirements of the Hungarian Food Codex regarding meat products and certain prepared meats.
The primary objective of the proposed amendment is to provide consumers with clearer and more accurate information about the quality and composition of meat products. During the comprehensive review of the current legislation, it became evident that producers need more specific guidelines for both the production and labelling of these goods.
New Concept: Protein Quality Value
A notable novelty of the draft is the introduction of the protein quality value concept, which aims to better assess the nutritional value and biological usability of the products. This parameter may become a key factor in comparing meat products, especially for health-conscious consumers.
Technical Clarifications and Quality Improvements
The amendment includes a range of technical updates, such as clarifying definitions and product categories, but also aims to raise quality standards. For certain meat product types, stricter requirements may be introduced regarding meat content, additives, or processing methods.
The full draft and its explanatory memorandum are already available on the Ministry of Agriculture’s public consultation platform. Finalisation of the regulation will take place after evaluating both industry feedback and public comments.
