The package of amendments to the mandatory provisions of the Hungarian Food Code on coffee and coffee substitutes has been published: the aim of the draft is to provide consumers with more accurate and detailed information on the on the quality, composition and designation of coffee and coffee substitute products, Infostart writes.

In addition to coffee, coffee substitutes and coffee blends, the regulation would also cover other coffee substitute extracts, instant coffee blends and coffee specialties as a new product group. The draft would also specify in more detail the ingredients that can be used, the permitted quality variations and the labelling requirements.

The amendment also includes general descriptions related to caffeine content (including decaffeinated products and the use of sweeteners) and clarifies the concept of roasted coffee.

The draft also covers several technical requirements: for example, the requirements for the moisture content and caffeine content of the coffee raw material (green coffee) and the framework for the quality conformity of the products.

If the amendment enters into force, products manufactured according to the previous regulations will be subject to the 24th month from the date of entry into force can still be produced and marketed until the last day of the and can be kept on the market until the expiration of the quality preservation/use by date.
