Proposals for recycling packaging may become more stringent
At the plenary session in Strasbourg, the European Parliament adopted its position on the proposals for the recycling of packaging, the aim of which is to manage the growing amount of waste and encourage recycling, the EU Parliament informed on Wednesday.
The report, which was adopted with 426 votes in favor, 125 against and 74 abstentions, sets out the position of the European Parliament before the negotiations with the EU governments that will begin soon.
In addition to the general packaging reduction targets of 5 percent by 2030, 10 percent by 2035, and 15 percent by 2040, proposed by the European Commission, the MEPs also want to set targets for the reduction of plastic packaging. The EP would fix this with target values of 10 percent until 2030, 15 percent until 2035, and 20 percent until 2040.
The EP would ban the sale of lightweight plastic bags less than 15 microns thick, unless they are necessary for hygiene reasons or used to package soft foods to prevent food waste.
