The expansion of strawberry fields and pricing in Hungary
In Hungary, the cultivated area for strawberries has seen a notable increase in recent years, growing from 550 hectares in 2020 to an officially recorded 656 hectares today. Including smaller producers, the total area is estimated at around 880-920 hectares, with the largest fields located in the counties of Baranya, Bács-Kiskun, and Pest.
Currently, strawberries grown under polytunnels are available at markets, but those grown in open fields are yet to come into season. At the end of April, producer prices ranged from 1,400 to 1,800 HUF, while retail prices vary. For instance, Spar’s online shop offers 500 grams of strawberries for 990 HUF, whereas Tesco and LIDL feature prices between 1,278 and 1,832 HUF per kilogram. “Pick-your-own” farms are also open, with prices generally between 2,300 and 2,500 HUF/kg.
Considering the price comparison, it might be wise to wait if planning to buy in large quantities, such as for preserving, as more favorable prices could become available later. Both markets and large stores sometimes show significant price differences, influencing consumer decisions.
