Ghost malls in the United States
The huge shopping malls established in the 50’s – which are the basic institutions of American consumer society – are empty, their number is decreasing.
The groups operating the shopping malls are not able to maintain the centers, due to the decline in traffic. Nowadays security guards are strolling in these empty buildings. According the estimation of analysts that by the end of the year the number of called ‘dead shopping malls’ will reach one hundred from the current eighty-four. In the year before 31 March the sales of the shopping malls decresed by 6.5 percent. Most of the decline affected the largest mall operator Simon Property Group. The investors are turning to big department stores that offer a common space such as Wal-Mart or Target.
