Tesco go green by wind
In the UK, Tesco is to install 10 metre high wind turbines in supermarket car parks across South Wales as part of its plan to cut its carbon footprint by 50% by 2020.
The turbines, which are white in colour
and generate six kilowatts of electricity each, are designed to
create energy in swirling winds found in built up areas. The first
turbine has been installed at Tesco’s Penarth Marina supermarket,
whilst two others are currently in the planning stages. The plans
have come under criticism as the turbines will generate a small
fraction of the estimated six gigawatts of power consumed by an
average Tesco superstore. However, a Tesco spokesperson said the
turbines would just be a contributor and that they were looking at
other environmentally friendly methods of powering their stores,
including the use of solar energy cells and combined heat and power
plants.
