Collecting selectively is a responsibility – Don’t leave out the beverage cartons!

Protecting the environment is our shared responsibility. One of the simplest yet most effective ways to contribute is selective waste collection. More and more households are separating packaging waste – paper, plastic, metal, and glass – which also includes used beverage cartons. Milk cartons, juice boxes, cooking cream or even whipping cream cartons – all of these can be made of composite beverage cartons, which layer paper, plastic, and often aluminum together.

This composite packaging can be recycled after proper sorting – but only if households also participate in selective collection. In parts of Győr and the surrounding region, service provider GYHG Nonprofit Kft. launched a door-to-door selective collection service at the beginning of the year to provide a higher level of service and a more convenient solution for residents.

Public participation is essential, which is why the Beverage Carton Association – in cooperation with GYHG Nonprofit Kft. – has launched an awareness campaign in the region. The campaign aims to increase the collection rate of beverage cartons and strengthen environmental awareness among residents.

  • As part of the campaign, we are analyzing the composition of mixed waste. How many beverage cartons still end up in mixed waste instead of being separately collected?
  • A poster campaign highlights the importance of separate collection, specifically focusing on beverage cartons.
  • A questionnaire survey is measuring separate waste collection habits in the region. Please fill it out too! The questionnaire is available here:

  • At school workshops, we present how beverage carton packaging can be recycled.
  • At community events, we use playful activities to raise awareness: “This is not an extreme sport!”

Excerpt from the campaign poster

In Győr and the surrounding towns, selective waste collection has been available for more than 20 years. Alongside the REpont return network launched by MOL MOHU Waste Management Zrt., from January 1, 2025, door-to-door selective collection has been expanded to the operational area of the Győr Regional Waste Management Municipal Association – including Győr. In practice, this means that residents of single-family homes and small apartment buildings (with fewer than four units) can regularly place recyclable packaging waste in front of their homes. In Győr, beverage cartons go into the yellow bin, while in the countryside they go into the yellow collection bag, together with other packaging waste (plastic bottles, metal cans, paper packaging). Glass packaging waste continues to be collected at selective waste collection points. Preparations are underway to further expand door-to-door selective collection in Győr.

Where the familiar collection points remain – in larger apartment buildings in Győr – beverage cartons should continue to be placed in the paper collection container.

Detailed information about the service and collection days can be found on the GYHG Nonprofit Kft. website (https://www.gyhg.hu) and through the service provider’s mobile app (“112 Hulladék”).

The collected mixed packaging waste is transported to the Sashegy Waste Management Center in Győr, where it is sorted. Beverage cartons are then baled separately and sent to the next stage of recycling, recovering valuable secondary raw materials, reducing environmental impact, and promoting a circular economy.

Selective waste collection is not just a good habit, but a concrete step toward a more sustainable future. Every beverage carton that goes into the recycling bin instead of general waste counts.

What can we do?

  • Put beverage cartons into the yellow bin or collection bag.
  • Remember: this waste is recyclable too!
  • Pay attention to collection days and make use of free collection services!
  • Don’t forget our campaign slogan: “Separate waste collection is not an extreme sport!”

From August to October, watch out for our campaign activities – and let’s collect beverage cartons separately together!
