Szeged restricts pub opening hours – caterers protest
The general assembly of the city of Szeged has decided: from mid-April, the opening hours of restaurants will be limited to 11 p.m. by default. The aim of the measure is to protect the peace of the population and reduce alcohol consumption in public areas. The affected shops can only be exempted from the regulation with a special permit, HelloVidék reports.
The decision sparked sharp protests from the Szeged Catering and Small Business Association, which launched a petition against the decree. According to them, the tightening will deal a serious blow to the local catering industry, and up to 1,000 jobs could be at risk. The sector is already in a difficult situation due to rising operating costs, rental and terrace usage fees, and inflation.
According to the decree, shops can apply for a night-time opening permit, which they can receive if they have operated without complaints for the past six months, complied with the law, and ensured the maintenance of public order. The permit may be revoked if these conditions are not met.
The restriction does not apply to bars operating in accommodation facilities, gas stations, student balls, graduation banquets and certain larger events, such as the Szeged Open-Air Games or the SZIN festival.
According to caterers, the regulation could result in the city’s nightlife dying out in the long term and cause further economic damage. Further discussions are expected on the matter.
