Carrefour Spain aims to open at least 100 stores this year, which should take it over the milestone of 1,600 outlets in the country. This will strengthen the retailer’s market-leading position in the country.

In the first half of the year, the French retail group has already opened 46 stores in Spain. By the end of the year, that should have been more than doubled, repeating last year’s achievement of more than 100 store openings in twelve months. Carrefour is the fastest-growing retailer in the country in terms of store openings: since 2019, the retailer has already opened 691 stores there. In the same period, the group invested more than 150 million euros and created more than 3,500 jobs. In a press release, executive director Elodie Perthuisot spoke of a “very ambitious expansion plan”.

Carrefour is rolling out new store formats, such as Carrefour City, and last year also took over 47 Supercor stores from El Corte Inglés. These are being converted to the Carrefour Market, Carrefour Express and Supeco formats. Carrefour currently has 204 hypermarkets, 162 Carrefour Market supermarkets, 1,090 Carrefour Express convenience stores and 69 Supeco discount stores in Spain. The chain is the market leader in the country, with a market share of almost 10 % and reported comparable sales growth of 1.4 % in the first quarter.
