The Hungarian Rotary community has been serving good for a hundred years
A century of friendship, responsibility, commitment. For more than a century, Rotary has proven that the world becomes a better place when people come together, take action, and take responsibility for each other. Among the organization’s members were such renowned scientists, artists, and public figures as Albert Szent-Györgyi, Ferenc Móra, Károly Gundel, Kálmán Kandó, and György Bálint.
In 1905, lawyer Paul Harris and his friends founded the organization in Chicago with the simple yet powerful idea that friendship, honesty, and service can shape communities—and even change lives. This spirit also arrived in Hungary in 1925, when the first domestic Rotary Club was founded in Budapest, starting a community that has been continuously serving good ever since.
More than a charity
Being a Rotary member is an opportunity to belong to a community where honesty and openness are valued. Clubs create professional and human relationships that lead to lifelong support. The value of Rotary becomes clear when someone becomes part of a project, sees the power of a smile, the real impact of a donation, or experiences what it feels like to create something lasting together.
100 years of Hungarian Rotary successes
The past hundred years of Hungarian Rotary have been a story of perseverance, community, and humanity. Today, there are 57 clubs operating across the country, which, although they operate in different fields, are united by a common goal: to make the world a better place in their own environment. For decades, Hungarian Rotarians have supported those in need, provided scholarships to talented young people, helped hospitals, schools and communities, ensured environmental protection, participated in international health and education programs, and are closely connected to Rotary’s global initiatives – including the world-famous fight to eradicate polio.
Medical diagnostic equipment worth millions, environmental protection, education support, helping families, and study scholarships – are just a few of the good deeds that Rotary has accomplished over the past 100 years. Rotary’s Gift of Life program covers the cost of heart surgery for Hungarian children abroad. The MOST program aims to prevent the silent killer, stroke, with educational programs.
The legacy of Hungarian Rotary
The next hundred years will be about those who join this mission. The clubs are still active, open, creative and innovative today: modern organizations in which civic responsibility meets community joy. Being a member of Rotary is an honor – but even more so an opportunity. If someone wants to belong to a community where people matter and action matters, then Rotary will definitely find a home.
Hungarian Rotary is a member of Rotary International as District 1911. This year’s governor in our country is Júlia Molnár.
“We currently have more than 1,200 members in 57 clubs, and we also have nearly 30 youth clubs: EarlyAct targets high school students, Interact targets high school students, and Rotaract clubs primarily target university students and involve them in service work. I am very proud that more and more young people are joining us”
– the governor emphasized.
The organization will celebrate the 100th anniversary on November 29th at the Eiffel Workshop. Rotary members, ambassadors, foreign guests and performing artists will also attend the event. The International Water Conference will be held a day earlier, where you can learn about Rotary’s work for environmental protection, especially clean water.
