Nébih handed out certificates of appreciation for arable plant varieties
On Wednesday, the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) presented certificates of recognition for arable plant varieties at Székkutas in Csongrád-Csanád county.
At the event held at the Székkutasi Plant Experiment Station, 26 breeding houses received certificates, with which a total of 88 varieties of 15 arable plant species (one of them a horticultural plant variety) was recognized by Nébih last year. Pursuant to the applicable legislation, only state-recognized (registered) plant varieties can be propagated and marketed in Hungary. Gábor Oravecz, the president of Nébih, interpreted the greeting of Márton Nobilis, the State Secretary responsible for the food industry and trade policy of the Ministry of Agriculture, who emphasized that the state has already recognized more than 1,300 plant varieties, which is approximately 5 percent of the varieties recognized in Europe. He added that almost 260 new breed candidates are announced every year, and an average of 90 breeds are recognized by the state.
In addition to the ceremonial award ceremony, three anniversaries were also celebrated in Székkutas on Wednesday: the Hungarian plant variety experiment is 130 years old, the National Food Chain Safety Office is 10 years old this year, and the Székkutas Plant Variety Experimental Station is 70 years old.
