An exhibition titled “Sanitary” about the reality of hygiene poverty opens at the KULT7 Gallery
An exhibition titled Sanitary, presenting the reality of hygiene poverty in Hungary, will open on October 2 at the KULT7 Gallery in Budapest.
The focus of the exhibition by the creative association Pompa Copia is housing poverty, and within it the lack of hygiene conditions, which is a problem affecting hundreds of thousands of people in Hungary today – the organizers’ announcement reads.
The aim of the exhibition is to make the reality of housing poverty visible and to reflect on the problem using the means of art, as well as to start a dialogue in society and encourage the audience to take action.
At the center of the installations are associatively displayed hygiene spaces that evoke personal destinies. The exhibition material is supplemented with photo series taken from real locations, thus seeking to form a bridge between artistic depiction and documentary authenticity.
The announcement highlights that housing poverty is a serious problem in Hungary, especially among those living in extreme poverty. According to the 2024 report of the Habitat for Humanity organization, which deals with housing problems, 2.8 million people live in housing poverty in Hungary. Many of them struggle with problems caused by waterlogging or moldy walls, or live in overcrowded properties, and many families still live in conditions where they do not have a bathroom or a toilet.
Organized as part of this year’s Budapest Design Week series of events, Szaniter is not just an exhibition, but a social platform that invites the audience to think and act together
– they wrote in the announcement.
