Of the total biomass raw material used in 2024, 21.5 percent was used for energy production in Central Transdanubia and 21.0 percent in Southern Transdanubia. Together, the two regions mentioned accounted for more than two-fifths of the biomass raw material use, while the remaining 57.5 percent was shared by 5 regions. Based on the data received, power plants and heating plants using biomass raw materials, and enterprises operating industrial boilers in Hungary used 40.8 percent wood chips (1,008.4 thousand tons) for their energy production in 2024, 22.3 percent more than the previous year.

3.9 million tons of biomass were used for biogas production

Other biogas plant raw materials contributed the largest amount, 54.6 percent, in 2024. Based on the data received, power plants, heating plants and enterprises operating industrial boilers using biomass raw materials used 40.8 percent wood chips (1,008.4 thousand tons) for their energy production in 2024, which was 22.3 percent more than the previous year. Of the total uses, wood chips (forest chips, sawdust, bark) were followed by processing raw materials (18.9 percent), then firewood (round, pelletized, logs) with 14.5 percent, and grain straw with 7.5 percent (Figure 5). The importance of wood by-products increased, as their utilization rate increased by 46.2 percentage points compared to 2023, and this resulted in a nearly 65 percent increase in the amount used in 2024. Other raw materials accounted for 12.6 percent, which is a 29.2 percentage point decrease compared to 2023.
