Poultry meat exports increased significantly, imports decreased sharply

According to data from the Central Statistical Office, Hungary’s poultry meat exports increased by 34 percent to almost 23 thousand tons in the first month of 2026 compared to January 2025. Within this, chicken meat exports increased by 31 percent to 17 thousand tons, and turkey meat by 16 percent to 2 thousand tons. The largest target markets for poultry meat were Poland and Romania.

Hungary’s poultry meat imports decreased by 38 percent to 3 thousand tons in January this year, within this, chicken meat imports fell by 40 percent to 3 thousand tons, while turkey meat increased by 24 percent to 270 tons. Most poultry meat still came from Poland. According to AKI PÁIR data, the live weight producer price of slaughter chicken in Hungary decreased by 2.4 percent to 420.6 HUF/kilogram, while that of slaughter turkey increased by 12.8 percent to 684.4 HUF/kilogram in the first two months of 2026 compared to the same period of the previous year. The processing sales price of chicken breast fillet was 1919.3 HUF/kilogram (+0.8 percent), chicken breast with bone was 1160.8 HUF/kilogram (–6.5 percent), chicken breast (total) was 1803.9 HUF/kilogram (–2.7 percent), and chicken leg was 838.2 HUF/kilogram (–3.4 percent) in the observed period. According to European Commission data, the EU average price of whole chicken was 291 EUR/100 kilograms in February 2026, which exceeded the previous year by 4.5 percent.
