Due to the lack of long weekends, domestic guests mainly chose short, 1-2-night domestic trips in the first three months of the year – according to the latest data from Szallas.hu.

According to the accommodation booking site’s announcement on Monday, 66 percent of domestic bookings in the first quarter were worth up to 70 thousand forints, and 27 percent were worth between 70 thousand and 170 thousand forints. During this period, 26 percent of the total value of online payments was paid with a SZÉP card on the Szallas.hu site.

The most popular city was Budapest, followed by Eger, Pécs, Szeged and Hévíz. Gyula, Siófok, Miskolc, Hajdúszoboszló and Debrecen were also among the ten most visited settlements. In terms of tourist regions, the most domestic guests booked in the Northern Great Plain and Budapest-Central Danube Region, and Lake Balaton took third place, even before the high season.

Hotels continued to be the most popular accommodation type, with 41 percent of bookings in the first quarter going to hotels. Apartments accounted for 25 percent of bookings, guesthouses for 17 percent, and bed and breakfasts for 13 percent, while other accommodation types, such as hostels, were chosen by guests for 4 percent of bookings.

Based on the pre-bookings received for the second quarter, the Balaton region may top the regional popularity list, overtaking the Northern Great Plain, which has been leading for months. Budapest and Eger continue to be among the most popular destinations, while Siófok has moved up to third place on the top list. Among the settlements around Lake Balaton, Balatonfüred, Hévíz, Keszthely, and Tapolca are also in high demand.

A shift can also be seen in travel habits, with 40 percent of bookings for the second quarter being for two nights, 25 percent for three nights, while the proportion of one-night trips decreased to 24 percent, Szallas.hu reported.
