Professional organizations: no one should bring plants, seeds, or fruits home from a vacation outside the European Union
The National Chamber of Agriculture, the National Food Chain Safety Office, the Interprofessional Association of Hungarian Ornamental Gardeners and the FruitVeB Hungarian Vegetable and Fruit Product Council advise travelers to never bring home plants, flowers, seeds, fruits or vegetables from a vacation outside the European Union.
In their joint statement sent to MTI on Monday, the organizations emphasized that these exotic plants may harbor pests that can harm plants native to and grown in the European Union.
Precaution is also important because plant pests that cannot be controlled can be brought into the country from distant places. Either because there is no effective protection technology against it yet, or because the native plants are not resistant enough. In addition, invasive species can enter the country in this way, which can overwhelm native plants and harm local flora and fauna.
