The National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority (NKFH) revealed serious food safety and hygiene deficiencies during an inspection of three different commercial units, the authority announced in a statement sent to MTI on Tuesday.

As they emphasized, the violations revealed clearly indicate that violating the rules not only has legal consequences, but can also pose a direct threat to the health of consumers.

During the inspection carried out at the Brutál Diszkont store under official control, expired foods were found on the shelves, including products intended for particularly sensitive consumer groups. Several products also lacked the best-before date and batch identification marking, which poses a serious food safety risk.

During the inspection at the Market Point retail unit, the authority uncovered systemic deficiencies affecting several food categories. The measures covered processed foods, locally baked products, and fruit and vegetable products.

During the inspection, inspectors also identified several products without Hungarian language markings or with expired best-before dates on both the shelves and in the refrigerators. The products complained about included meat products, dairy products, sweets, and quick-frozen goods. Their distribution poses a direct food safety risk, therefore the authority has ordered the immediate withdrawal of the affected items and the prohibition of their sale, they announced.

The authority also identified a significant amount of untraceable products, especially among locally baked pastries. Serious hygiene problems also arose during the storage of the products.

During the inspection of the vegetable and fruit supply, several products lacked the country of origin, classification and variety designation. Such labeling deficiencies not only violate consumer rights, but also distort fair market competition, the authority noted.

The conditions discovered in the Akciópont store were blatantly serious. Inspectors found a dirty sales area and warehouse, neglected, dirty and rusty equipment. Cobwebs and accumulated dirt hung from the ceiling, and a complete lack of cleaning was evident. The store offered expired food products – including baby food – and several products could not be traced in any way. Unpackaged food was stored on the floor, while a dog was also in the sales area, cleaning equipment was scattered, and disinfectant was placed in close proximity to the food. The lack of a HACCP system, the failure to keep a refrigeration log, and the shortcomings in the training and health qualifications of the employees further increased the risk. The violations revealed were of such magnitude that the authority suspended the operation of the store with immediate effect. The unit could only reopen after a complete cleaning and the elimination of deficiencies, the NKFH explained.

As announced, following the inspections, the operators fulfilled their legal obligations and ensured compliance with food safety and hygiene rules, thus the official action achieved its goal, the authority concluded.

The NKFH and the government agencies under its professional management give priority to monitoring compliance with food safety rules in the interest of consumers. At the same time, buyers should make careful decisions: if several such warning signs are observed in a store, it is advisable to avoid making a purchase, as these circumstances may endanger not only the quality of the product, but also the health of consumers, the NKFH warned.
