As Easter approaches, ham remains a staple on the Hungarian holiday table, but consumer decisions are increasingly shaped by shrinking wallets.

In a recent broadcast of the Agrarszektor Alapvetés podcast, Martina Mostisch, executive secretary of the Hungarian Meat Industry Association, said that based on market trends, the proportion of people looking for cheaper, quick-cured hams than traditional Easter shopping is increasing.

According to the expert, the ham market has been noticeably reorganized following the “economic roller coaster” of recent years: while consumer traditions are strong, price sensitivity often overrides previous preferences. The podcast also discussed how consumer perceptions often operate around the terms “homemade” and “artisanal”, so it is crucial to make a conscious choice to know what terms and information customers look for on the label and what they actually mean.

The focus of the conversation was not only on product selection, but also on practical issues: where to buy, how to reduce the chance of disappointment, and which label information may indicate actual quality differences. Based on the overall picture, the Easter ham season may remain strong this year, but the basket composition is increasingly determined by the cost-value ratio and label interpretation.
