The genome of melon was decoded by Spaniards
In the scope of the cooperation of nine Spanish research centers the complete description of melon’s genome is ready.
Seven melon versions were introduced to the genetic analysis, the researchers published the results in the PNAS journal of the American Academy of Sciences.
The genom sequencing found that the melon’s DNA contains 450 million base pairs and 27,427 genes. It seems that the melon’s genome is much larger than its nearest relative, the cucumber, which only has 360 million base pairs. (MTI)
