We received shocking news about European agriculture, that’s what the war did
The outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war has caused significant disruptions in global agricultural markets, in particular both sides are major exporters of cereals, oilseeds and fertilizers.
This was visible not only in food prices, but also in the average prices of agricultural production, as well as the increase in the price of input materials in the first quarter of 2022, whether we compare this year’s data with the fourth quarter of the previous year or the first quarter of 2021 – read the Eurostat website. In this respect, Hungary is in the middle of the EU member states, even though the prices in these countries have increased to a greater extent than the average level of price increases experienced in the EU.
In 2022, global agricultural markets were significantly disrupted by the outbreak of the Russo-Ukraine war, especially as both Russia and Ukraine were major exporters of cereals, wheat, corn, oilseeds (especially sunflower), and fertilizer. This contributed to the increase in the instability of the markets, which in turn led to a sharp increase in the price of the most important agricultural products and input materials, Eurostat’s analysis revealed. In the first quarter of this year, the average price of goods and services currently used in agriculture (i.e. expenditures not related to investment) rose by 9.5% compared to the fourth quarter of 2021. This was supported by a 21.2% increase in fertilizers and soil conditioners, a 17.4% increase in the price of energy and lubricants, and a strong 9.2% increase in the price of animal feed. Meanwhile, the average output price of agricultural products rose by 6% overall, reports the Agrárszektor.
