Siófok is the star of the summer: short trips and apartments at Lake Balaton have conquered
Siófok was the most popular summer destination for Hungarians in 2024, according to booking data from Szállás.hu. The “capital” of the southern shore of Lake Balaton came out on top not only regionally, but nationally as well, attracting twice as many reservations as the second-placed settlement or region.
Among the most popular domestic destinations, in addition to Siófok, Budapest, Eger, Balatonfüred, Hajdúszoboszló, Hévíz, Gyula, Szeged, Pécs and Miskolc also stood out. Around Lake Balaton, Siófok was followed on the popularity list by Balatonfüred, Hévíz, Balatonlelle, Keszthely, Zamárdi, Balatonboglár, Balatonföldvár, Fonyód and Balatonalmádi.
The analysis of summer travel habits shows that short stays were typical. Vacations of one or two nights dominated, which follows the trend of recent years. This phenomenon is not new, as in recent years, stays of one to three nights have been the most common during the summer.
Apartments proved to be the most popular type of accommodation among vacationers, as every third booking fell into this category. Hotels were also popular, one in four travelers chose them. Guest houses accounted for just over a fifth of the bookings, while 13 percent of guests stayed in boarding houses.
It is also an interesting figure that more than 27 percent of the total value of summer online reservations was paid by users with a SZÉP card, which indicates the popularity of this payment method in domestic tourism.
