The laboratory of the National Food Chain Safety Authority (Nébih) confirmed the presence of Aujeszky’s disease virus in animals from a breeding pig herd in Somogyszob. The presence of the infection was also identified by the authority in two other farms of the pig-breeding enterprise, also operating in Somogy County. In the case of the affected herds, official measures are in progress, and an epidemiological quarantine has been ordered on the farms.

The first clinical symptoms appeared in December 2025 at the pig breeding farm in Somogyszob, Somogy County, which were manifested in gradually increasing piglet mortality and abortions. The presence of Aujeszky’s disease was confirmed in the Nébih laboratory on December 31, and then on January 6, by serological testing. The official measures began on December 31, including sampling at three other pig farms of the farm, also located in Somogy County. Laboratory results confirmed the presence of the infection in two herds – Somogyszob, Nagybaráti-puszta, and Böhönye, Terepezd-puszta. Official measures were ordered on the affected farms in accordance with the provisions of Decree 30/2009. (III. 27.) FVM on the rules for the exemption of pig herds from Aujeszky’s disease and the maintenance of exemption. The epidemiological investigation, including the detection of the origin of the infection and the examination of contact farms, is currently ongoing.

Hungary has been recognized as free from the disease by the European Union since 2015

According to the provisions of Commission Regulation (EU) 2020/689 on Aujeszky’s disease, the current outbreak does not threaten the country’s exemption status. However, in order to maintain immunity, it is necessary to fully implement the measures specified in national and EU legislation. Accordingly, it is justified, among other things, to eradicate infected herds and to examine the herds of pig farms located within a 2 km radius of the affected farms or in epidemiological contact with them.

About Aujeszky’s disease

Aujeszky’s disease is an infectious disease caused by a herpesvirus that primarily affects pigs. The clinical presentation of the disease varies depending on the age of the animals. In young piglets, feverish general and nervous symptoms and a high mortality rate are typical, while in older pigs, mainly respiratory symptoms are observed. In pregnant sows, fetal death and abortion may occur. Infected pigs usually remain virus carriers for a long time. In addition to pigs, many other animal species are also susceptible to the virus, such as cattle, sheeps, goats, dogs and cats. In their case, the infection is usually severe, with intense itching and neurological symptoms, and most often leads to death. The virus is not dangerous to humans and does not cause human disease.
