Sentix: Eurozone investor confidence index improved significantly in May
The Sentix eurozone investor confidence index for May improved more significantly than analysts had expected, rising to its highest level since June last year.
The investor confidence index, released on Monday, rose to minus 8.1 points from minus 19.5 points in April. Analysts had expected a less positive figure of minus 14.9 points for May.
Within the sentiment index, the current situation sub-index improved to minus 19.3 points in May, its highest level since August last year, from minus 23.2 points in April.
The sub-index for the outlook for the next six months moved to the positive side, increasing by 19.6 points compared to April, to plus 3.8 points.
Sentix said the improvement in the indicators suggests that investors’ fears of a recession have eased compared to last month. Sentix added that the 1,068 investors surveyed between May 1 and 3 appear to have appreciated the European Commission’s balanced response to the US tariffs so far.
In Germany, Europe’s largest economy, the expectations index rose by more than 20 points to 5.5.
“The main victims of Trump’s tariff policy are the US economy and, to some extent, the economies of China and Switzerland,” Sentix said.
