In Romania, the distribution of products containing insect meal was restricted by law
From now on, products containing insect meal that are recognized and authorized as food by the European Union may only be distributed in Romania on the separate shelves of stores, accompanied by a clearly visible warning label.
The law on this, initiated by Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu and his two fellow deputies and voted at the end of November, was announced by President Klaus Iohannis on Monday.
The law prohibits the mixing of insect meal in foods included in the national list of traditional products. The law contains a precise description of how the ingredients must be indicated on foods produced with insect derivatives in a way that is immediately understandable for consumers, as well as the fact that these can cause allergic reactions in consumers who are sensitive to them. In the case of restaurants, it must be stated on the menu whether insect meal has been used for the food, and the guest must be informed of this.
“People should know what they are buying and the label should be clear and contain full information about these products. Economic patriotism means protecting local producers and traditional Romanian products and food”
– pointed out in April, when the draft was submitted, then Speaker of the House Marcel Ciolacu, who has since been appointed Prime Minister.
