Amazon set to build first robotic fulfilment centre in Australia
Amazon plans to build its first robotic fulfilment centre, and the largest, in Australia, in a bid to speed up online orders processing time and increase its competitiveness.
The new fulfilment centre will be built at Kemps Creek, near the Western Sydney Aerotropolis, and is expected to create 1,500 permanent jobs.
Construction is expected to be completed by late 2021. Its size will be equivalent to the size of 22 rugby, or around the same size as Taronga Zoo in Sydney, and will be able to house up to 11 miilion items. It is also Amazon’s second fulfilment centre in Western Sydney.
According to Amazon, the new facility will be the first fulfilment centre in the southern hemisphere where the company’s “latest robotics systems” is deployed. Amazon Robotics technology will be used to move shelves to employees to reduce picking time for orders.
