Artificial intelligence (AI) is a competitiveness factor, and targeted support for Hungarian small and medium-sized enterprises is crucial for the effective application of artificial intelligence technologies, said Csaba Balázs Rigó, President of the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH), at the international conference of the Public Procurement Authority (KH), in Budapest, according to a statement from the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) on Monday.

At an event held on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the KH’s founding, the head of the GVH emphasized that promoting the development of Hungarian language models is a matter of national sovereignty, and the decision of the GVH Competition Council in the Microsoft case at the end of May was an important step forward in this regard. Thanks to the procedure of the Hungarian national competition authority, the global software giant undertook to create a database containing at least 10 billion Hungarian word combinations, which it will integrate into its AI-based systems after appropriate preparation, they wrote.

According to the statement, Csaba Balázs Rigó highlighted that the authority monitors the proper functioning of economic competition mechanisms, prevents or eliminates practices and behaviors that restrict or distort competition, thereby serving the interests of consumers and supporting the strengthening of the competitive position of Hungarian enterprises in the market. In his presentation, he called market analyses an effective tool and recalled that last year, among the competition authorities of EU member states, the GVH was one of the first to prepare a comprehensive market analysis of the effects of AI on market competition and consumer transaction decisions.

Among other things, he stated that the application of AI can increase the competitiveness of Hungarian enterprises, but that the introduction and development of products intended for the Hungarian market is not part of the business policy of global technology companies. The targeted development of self-learning systems based on small languages is a particularly important factor due to data sovereignty, data security and cultural identity preservation, therefore Microsoft’s commitment is of extraordinary importance – said the President of the GVH, adding: with this pioneering development, the capabilities of Hungarian-language AI-based applications can be improved by orders of magnitude.

He also pointed out that the revised national AI strategy adopted a few weeks ago is in line with the proposals of the GVH experts on several points. The office supports all initiatives that, in addition to fair market competition and consumer protection, promote the utilization of artificial intelligence in the national economy and the application of AI by small and medium-sized enterprises – said Csaba Balázs Rigó, according to the statement.
