Record number of EU guest nights in 2025
The number of nights spent in tourist accommodation in the European Union rose to a record high in 2025; according to preliminary estimates, 3.08 billion nights were recorded, which was 61.5 million, or two percent, more than a year earlier, the European Union’s statistical office, Eurostat, announced on Friday.
According to the office’s report, the growth was primarily driven by the increase in the number of nights spent by foreign guests. Foreigners spent 46.1 million more nights in European Union countries, and domestic guests spent 15.4 million more nights. The distribution of guest nights was balanced, with foreign guests accounting for 49 percent and domestic guests for 51 percent.
Among the types of accommodation, hotels and similar establishments came out on top with 1.9 billion guest nights, which was 63 percent of the total turnover. Tourists spent 743 million nights in holiday homes and other short-term accommodation, and 413 million nights in campsites.
Compared to the previous year, the number of guest nights increased in almost all EU Member States in 2025. Malta achieved the largest increase by ten percent, followed by Poland by seven percent and Latvia by six percent. A slight decline was recorded in Romania and Ireland.
