The world’s grain harvest may break a record
The world’s grain harvest in the 2013-14 season will increase by 7.2 percent and will reach a record 2.479 billion tons – the FAO estimates in its report released on Thursday.
According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, the production of wheat will increase by 6.8 percent to 704 million tons, the production of other cereals will rise to 1.275 billion tons with 9.7 percent.
The imports of the poorer countries will grow by 5 percent, especially in Egypt, Indonesia and Nigeria. Worldwide, 34 countries need external food assistance, including 27 African countries. (MTI Eco, Világgazdaság Online)
