At the end of 2023, SZÉP card traffic was record-breaking
By the end of 2023, the K&H SZÉP card had broken all previous monthly records in terms of traffic. In addition to the plastic card, the digital version has also become increasingly popular, with the help of which card holders made purchases worth nearly HUF 4.7 billion in December. This is almost double the average monthly spend and shows a significant increase compared to previous months.
Most of the sudden increase in traffic was the purchase of cold food, which, based on the decision of the Hungarian Government last summer, is no longer possible from January 1st. In the last month of the year, the use of the K&H SZÉP card almost exploded, and the turnover almost doubled the average of the first 11 months, to HUF 4.7 billion. Cardholders took advantage of the opportunity to buy cold food until the last moment, and many also used hotel and restaurant services during the holidays.
Between August and November, on average, food purchases accounted for 31 percent of the total K&H SZÉP card turnover, while in December it accounted for more than half of the spending, 52 percent. During the five months available for cold food purchases, 37 percent of K&H SZÉP card spending was used for this purpose, while in the same period of the previous year, this ratio was only 26 percent.
