The largest food collection in the country is a near-record result
The largest food collection in the country ended with a record-breaking result, 342 thousand kilos of donations were received at the weekend campaign of the Hungarian Food Bank Association. Customers donated 219 kilos in every minute of the three-day campaign, which took place in 356 stores in the country. In addition to the volunteer work of the 6,500 contributors, the outstanding numbers were also contributed to by the fact that this year’s donation was not hampered by price caps and quantity restrictions. Again, flour and sugar were the most frequently offered products. From the donations, the Food Bank can put together 68,000 food packages and deliver them to the needy.
After last year’s decline, the Christmas non-perishable food collection campaign of the Food Bank ended with outstanding results. 42% more offers were received this year, so it was possible to approach the record of 348,000 kilos achieved in 2021. The increase was also due to the fact that donations were accepted in thirty more stores this year than last year, and that the offering of flour and sugar, which traditionally comes in large quantities, was not hampered this year by price caps and quantity limits. However, the most important reason for the increase was clearly the increasing willingness of the population to donate, among them the youth and the retired age group proved to be the most supportive.
“This is the 18th time we have organized a Christmas fundraising campaign, but to this day we are touched by people’s willingness to help each and every time. In this case, many people also support those who apparently need help themselves. We thank all donors, as well as our partners and volunteers, for their cooperation”
said Balázs Cseh, president of the Food Bank.
