Lidl’s British subsidiary had a strong Christmas period: according to the discount chain, its turnover increased by 10 percent year-on-year in the four weeks ending December 24, and its revenue exceeded 1.1 billion pounds (nearly 490 billion forints). According to a Reuters report, this is the company’s strongest holiday performance in the United Kingdom so far, Világgazdaság reports.

According to Lidl’s data, nearly 51 million customers visited its stores during the period, which represents an 8 percent increase compared to the previous year. The chain, which is currently the sixth largest food retailer in the UK, has seen particularly strong demand for its Christmas seasonal products.

Top-selling items included cheese blocks, handmade crisps in special flavours such as baked camembert and spicy honey, and seasonal fruit and vegetables. The company said these products played a key role in increasing holiday basket values.

Lidl has been the UK’s fastest-growing brick-and-mortar supermarket chain for more than two years. The expansion is also supported by new store openings: the company opened its 1,000th store in the UK in November.

Lidl UK CEO Ryan McDonnell spoke of a record-breaking Christmas period, highlighting that the chain had reached new customer groups across the country. According to him, the company will continue to expand its store network, increase the proportion of British products and strengthen support for local communities.

Lidl currently operates more than 12,600 stores in 31 countries and 230 logistics centers worldwide.
