Budapest Airport is preparing for record traffic – summer preparations cover every detail
Unprecedented passenger traffic is expected at Liszt Ferenc International Airport in the summer season of 2025. Budapest Airport began preparations last fall to ensure that the airport operates smoothly and safely despite the increased travel demand. In May, 1.7 million passengers were handled, which is a 16% increase compared to the same period last year. In the first five months of the year, 7.4 million people visited the airport.
The summer period is a particularly stressful time for air transport, as up to a third of the annual passenger traffic is concentrated in these months. In addition to the school holidays and favorable weather, the increasing number of charter flights in addition to scheduled flights further increases the load. To address this, Budapest Airport has launched more than a dozen development projects in strategic cooperation with HungaroControl and the Ministry of National Economy.
As part of the preparations, the airport infrastructure is also being developed. The traffic bridge and boarding areas are being renovated, the capacity of Terminal 2 is being expanded, and the check-in hall will be expanded by the end of the year. There are already 36 self-service baggage drop-off machines to help speed up passenger processing, and early baggage drop-off is now available for some airlines.
New this year is that the efficiency of security checks has also been improved, with the most modern body scanners being put into operation in several lanes, reducing waiting times. However, ensuring a good passenger experience is not only the responsibility of the airport operator: cooperation between airlines, ground handlers, authorities and air traffic controllers is also needed – especially when disruptions occur due to weather conditions, technical faults or other external circumstances.
In order to manage delays and flight cancellations, BUD:carezone help desks will also be available this summer on the A and B sides of Terminal 2. In these areas, airport staff provide information and, if necessary, provide food, drinks and hygiene kits to passengers, including baby food for small children. Airport staff wearing blue vests are available all year round to assist passengers at any point in the terminal.
